A little over two years ago I resigned as Director of Operations at a multi-faceted church with a large congregation in Canadian standards. My role involved overseeing staff, working with the board of elders, finance and also dealing wth the weekly inquiries from those in the congregation. I am a Type A personality. Let's get it done yesterday! I make goals, I follow through and have little patience for those who are lazy, disrespectful or lack motivation to complete a task. So as you can guess I took on every challenge, and everyone else's challenge when it wasn't done to the standards that were expected. I loved my job, the people I worked with and the sense of accomplishment when things came together. Slowly I began to realize that I was taking on too much and within a few months began to experience complete exhaustion on all levels. I tried to resign three times and it wasn't until I finally listened to the nudges of my heart that I took the leap.
So I wake up January 2009 thinking what have I done? No job, no job title, 51 years old, female and no idea what is next. Slowly I had to take time to wait in that silence to figure out who I was and what value I had as an individual. I had two choices. Stay stuck in a rut and lament over what was or move forward and start thinking about what I could be or do. You always have a choice, no one can move you forward but yourself. No one is responsible for your happiness other than you. Not your employer, your spouse , your friends or family. I had to figure out what benefit I would bring to a leadership team, what shows up when Deb shows up. What are my strengths? Do I maximize my strengths to utilitize them in a profitable way? Through strength finder assessments I learned what I am all about. The environments I work best in and the people I work best with! An incredible foundation for the next step.
I love helping people discover their strengths through assessments and if this is something that interests you, please email me. The cost is not huge, and believe me, it will change how you view yourself and others. Start thinking - What does show up when I show up? Let's find out together!
